چکیده

The soil sorptivity, S, and saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, can be estimated from the inverse analysis of a cumulative infiltration curve using quasi-exact implicit (QEI) formulation or its corresponding 4-Terms (4T) approximation. Although these models consider as homogeneous media, there is no information about how heterogeneous profiles affect inferred properties. This work analyzes influence layered soils on Ks S estimates QEI 4T models, designs new procedure for treating curves measured profiles. Sequential Infiltration Analysis (SIA) method considers sequence increasing time series data to estimate RMSE function number samples used. A thickness upper uniform layer wetting front advance (WFA) also reported. SIA was applied on: (i) synthetic loam six involving 1, 2 3 cm over silty sandy soils, respectively, (ii) stratified laboratory columns, (iii) 20 experimental infiltrations performed in semiarid region North-Eastern Spain. Similar results were found between all cases. Erroneous observed when total considered analysis, regardless presence layering. In opposite, improved systems. exploits fact that increases reaches interface layers. Such increase allows: detection heterogeneity, determination time, to, required reach lower layer, and, accurate along with thickness. Laboratory experiments field measurements demonstrated could satisfactorily different contrasting shapes magnitudes. layering encountered most samplings restricted treatment short-medium times, allowed robust S. These indicate proposed promising tool characterizing properties

Macroporosity and infiltration in blanket peat: the implications of tension disc infiltrometer measurements

Little is known about the processes of infiltration and water movement in the upper layers of blanket peat. A tension infiltrometer was used to measure hydraulic conductivity in a blanket peat in the North Pennines, England. Measurements were taken from the surface down to 20 cm in depth for peat under four different vegetation covers. It was found that macropore flow is a significant pathway f...

Heterogeneity of Infiltration Rates in Alluvial Floodplains as Measured with a Berm Infiltration Technique

Hydrologic heterogeneities (e.g., macropores and gravel outcrops) in floodplains are hypothesized to play an integral role in impacting flow and leaching between the soil surface and shallow alluvial aquifers, which are intricately connected to streams. Infiltration is often assumed to be uniform, but this neglects the spatial variability common in anisotropic, heterogeneous alluvial floodplain...

Comparison of Experimentally and Theoretically Determined Infiltration in Coarse Textured Soil

Though it is vital to estimate infiltration as one of the key factors in effective management of water resources, only few studies have been carried out either to determine the infiltration or to compare the performance of infiltration models for coarse textured soils. Thus, the present study was conducted to accomplish two objectives. First to estimate the Horton’s infiltration model parameter...

Behavior of Unsaturated Layered Soil Columns during Infiltration

This paper presents the laboratory test results of vertical infiltration on two soil columns of finer over coarser soils subject to simulated rainfalls under conditions of no-ponding at the surface and constant head at the bottom. The main objectives were to evaluate the effect of rainfall intensity and duration; and to provide experimental evidence for soil water redistribution and hysteresis....
